The 2008 Spectrum Awards showcase colored gemstone jewelry at its best.

By Amber Michelle
A light-filled photography studio in New York City’s historic Greenwich Village was the setting for the judging of the AGTA Spectrum Awards and AGTA Cutting Edge Awards. This is the 24th year that the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) has held its competition honoring outstanding use of colored gemstones in jewelry and recognizing excellence in the lapidary arts.

A panel of five judges evaluated AGTA Spectrum Award entries on overall beauty, wearability, innovative design, effective use of materials, quality of gemstones and workmanship, as well as consumer appeal and ability to generate positive publicity for natural colored gemstones. AGTA Cutting Edge Awards entries were also part of the 500 submissions that were reviewed by

New York City designer Jane Bohan, Jane Bohan, Inc.; Peter Roth, of nationally renowned design firm David Yurman; Andrea Linett, editor, Lucky magazine and Rudi Wobito, of the lapidary firm Wobito Gems, Ltd., Ontario, Canada.

All winning entries are being displayed at the AGTA GemFair Tucson, held this month, and winners are being feted at a black-tie gala held in their honor during the GemFair.
